Nowadays anyone with access to the internet can can think they’re a journalist. The increase of smartphone usage in recent years means that people have access to a constant stream of information and knowledge, allowing them to look something up at a moment’s notice.
With more and more people engaging in this activity we are seeing an increase in what is known as citizen journalists. These are people who are dedicated to analysing online content and finding the truth behind things that have happened, such as the MH17 flight that crashed in Ukraine. One of these people is Eliot Higgins, the founder of citizen journalism website Bellingcat, who is encouraging more people to join the movement of citizen journalism; one that is creating change within the media industry.
